2015年3月26日Broncos quarterback Manning challenges UVa graduates to succeed
In football and in life, those hits never stop coming, Manning told the University of Virginia’s graduating class on Saturday at the Valedictory Exercises on the Lawn.
"You are about to run through the tunnel into an enormous field of uncertainty," said Manning, the five time winner of the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. "Hard hits or not, be prepared."
For Manning, preparation meant obsessing over game footage, with Lewis’ post tackle refrain of, "I’ll be back here in a couple minutes, punk," echoing through his head.
The class, he said, must lean on the skills they have honed at Thomas Jefferson’s university to tackle whatever comes their way.
But, he said, "You will be a rookie again; a freshman, or first year, if you will."
"The challenge will be to learn how to stand out and fit in at the same time," Manning said. "Be honest with yourself. Challenge your motivations and refuse to wallow."
Today, UVa is expected to award 6,364 degrees during the University’s 185th Final Exercise. Officials expect as many as 35,000 people to attend the ceremony, also scheduled to take place on the Lawn. About 15,000 people attended Saturday’s ceremony, where several awards were presented and the class rolled out a record high participation rate in gifts and pledges. Last year’s class set a benchmark of 68 percent; this year, 81 percent of the graduating class participated. The class handed over a $168,686 check to President Teresa A. Sullivan.
"You have hit it out of the ball park," Sullivan said. "I’m very grateful for your generosity and for the many ways in which your gift will help the university."
Of the 2,737 class gifts or pledges, 480 students earmarked their combined $12,000 in donations for AccessUVa, the school’s signature financial aid program. The University’s Board of Visitors in August voted 15 2 to roll back the "no loans" policy under the program. Helen E. Dragas, the former rector, and board member Kevin Fay cast the dissenting votes.
This year’s graduating class is the first to spend all four years under Sullivan’s tenure, a point raised three times Saturday by student leaders, including Class President Brandon Moores. He credited students’ vocal support of Sullivan with overturning the Dragas led ouster of Sullivan in 2012, for 16 days. They all began four years ago, Moores said, and "just under two years later, we welcomed her back when we made our voices heard."
Manning, whose wife, Ashley, is a 1997 graduate of the McIntire School of Commerce, said the graduating class had the opportunity to advocate for ethics and a values lacking in today’s society.
"Shake it up," Manning said. "You have the power to influence change in so many ways. Make kindness a priority, not a blurred line."
Manning kicked off his speech by crossing one regret off his list from the days he spent haunting Charlottesville when his wife was a student. He ate his weight in Sampson subs at Littlejohn’s and Bodo’s breakfasts, but Manning never threw a football across the hallowed Lawn.
"If you’re nervous, I understand," he said, to the three people singled out to receive a pass. "I’m sure this won’t go up on YouTube."
Dozens of attendees Saturday showed up wearing NFL jerseys with Manning’s name across the back, including fourth year politics and foreign affairs student Amanda Swanson.
"When I got a text saying he’d been picked to speak I was wearing this jersey," Swanson said. "I literally thought they were making fun of me because I’m such a fan."
Manning got his start as a college player in Swanson’s hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. Her family brought their Manning jerseys, too.
"He’s a really grounded person," Swanson said of Manning. ’I think he’s going to tell us it takes a team of other people to get you there.
’I know what it’s like to have a team help get you there, too," she said.
